The Junior League of Champlain Valley has completed the first phase of our new community project; which is creating Vermont’s first diaper bank. This project aligns with our new community focus area: affordable living.  Our Project Research and Development Committee researched opportunities that would have an impact on our local community. The committee determined that diapers were a need in our community and the community would benefit from a diaper bank. We reached out to The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf as our first partner in this project.

The Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf reported to us that between 8-10 people per day request diapers; but without a regular source of donations, the Food Shelf must turn people away. Our first phase was a diaper drive and aimed to collect 15,000 diapers by the middle of March for the Food Shelf. We met and surpassed that goal.

Currently, we are identifying funding partners and establishing a regular stream of diaper donations to address diaper need in our community. With guidance from the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN), we will join eleven Junior Leagues in other states with diaper banks. We plan to become an official NDBN member by 2019.

This project will not be successful without help from all of you! Here are a few things you can do to get involved.

1. Educate yourself about #diaperneed by reading through the materials on our website. Below find a two sided infographic (seen below) to start the conversation. Many of us were not aware of the problem until we started the research for this project, but the statistics are compelling.

2. Share the Amazon Wishlist (http://a.co/5uo9ndXand infographics on social media channels. Encourage your network to buy diapers and get involved. Not sure what to say? See infographics & blurb below!

3. Organize a mini diaper drive in your community (school, office, church, etc.) using our diaper drive toolkit. If you need help figuring out how to approach someone, check out our solicitation letter, which has been designed to be distributed with our infographic postcard.

4. Make a monetary donation online to support the drive.

5. Pick up postcards or a poster. Email us to coordinate picking up the materials.

If you have any questions along the way please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

Thank you in advance for your support and enthusiasm! We have been hard at work and are excited to launch this project!!
